In 2003, Jobs learned that he had a neuroendocrine tumor, a rare but operable cancer of the pancreas. Instead of operating immediately, Jobs changed his vegetarian diet and continued to use oriental medicine. In doing so, he extended the surgical procedure by nine months – raising concerns among Apple’s board of directors.

Apple executives feared that shareholders could withdraw their stock if Jobs’ illness became known. In the end, Jobs kept his illness a secret, not out of fear of turning his back on shareholders. Jobs’ tumor was successfully removed in 2004. Naturally, Jobs gave outsiders little information about his health in later years.
